Introduced alongside the outwardly similar 380 SL roadster and SLC coupé models at the Geneva Salon in March 1980, the 500 SL and 500 SLC retained the Type 107 bodyshell first introduced in 1971/72 in virtually unchanged form, the most noticeable difference being the addition of a front spoiler. Built on a longer wheelbase, the coupé models accommodated two rear seat passengers and provided greater boot space than their open-topped siblings. The running gear followed Mercedes-Benz's established pattern, comprising all-independent suspension and four-wheel disc brakes, while a new four-speed automatic transmission was standard equipment.
The 500 SLC featured the all-alloy 4,973cc overhead-camshaft V8 engine that had debuted in the 450 SLC 5.0 of 1977. Lighter, more powerful and less thirsty than the old 4.5-litre iron-block V8, the 5.0-litre produced 240bhp at 5,000rpm, an output sufficient to propel the luxuriously-equipped yet lightweight 500 SLC to 225km/h. With approximately the same amount of power on tap as the legendary 300 SL sports car, the 500 SLC was both lighter and slightly quicker off the mark, though a little down on top speed when compared to its illustrious cousin.
This luxurious Mercedes-Benz 500 SLC was delivered new by the Mercedes-Benz dealer in Berlin in 1980, featuring the elegant Astral Silver Metallic paintwork and a striking Blue Leather interior.
Fitted with an automatic transmission, the car was equipped with numerous options, making it even more exclusive and convenient, including:
