- A rare high-performance AMG-tuned G-Wagen
- Appealing black over black color scheme
- High spec, with many desirable options
The purposeful appearance – fundamentally unchanged throughout its life – and engineering excellence secured the 'G-Wagen's' cult status and earned its place among the most coveted of classic 4x4s. Testifying to its wide appeal, the G-Wagen holds the distinction of being the longest-running model in Mercedes-Benz history. For 1991, a revised (Type 463) chassis was introduced, incorporating the very latest in off-road traction technology in the form of three electronically engaged differentials in addition to anti-lock brakes. In most markets, the G-Wagen was available in short- and long-wheelbase versions, and in convertible or hardtop configuration on the short chassis models.
Refinement and comfort improved in the late 1980s, but by the early 1990s Mercedes-Benz recognized a growing market for luxurious off-roaders, and in 1993 introduced the limited-edition 500 GE, a 5.0-litre V8-powered model that elevated the G-Wagen into Range Rover territory. After two years in production, the 500 GE disappeared, returning in 1998 as the G 500, again powered by a 5.0-litre V8 petrol engine.
There have been countless updates to the Type 463 since then, including a range of special models and even a few from Mercedes-Benz's in-house tuning shop, AMG. The official AMG G-Wagen arrived in 2000, featuring a tuned 5.4-litre M113 V8 stuffed under the hood, rated for 349hp. The engine was paired with a 5-speed automatic transmission, and breathed through special side-exit exhausts, which gave the G-Wagen a surprisingly robust bark. The unlikely combination of AMG tuning and the G-Wagen's off-road prowess proved to be a surprise hit, and AMG continues to work their magic on the iconic Geländewagen to this day.
This 2001 G55 Cabriolet is a rare and desirable early example, offered in open-topped, short-wheelbase specification. Finished in Obsidian Black with black leather trim and a black soft-top, it is well equipped as one should expect of the ultimate G-Wagen. Options and features include the Exclusive Package, Burl Walnut interior trim, COMAND DVD navigation, stainless spare tire cover, grille guard, 18-inch wheels, heated seats, and more. In current ownership for 15 years and currently displaying just over 100,000 kilometers, it is nicely presented throughout, and the seller reports regular maintenance has been carried out at factory-recommended intervals.
Classic 4x4s are a growing niche in the collector market, and few are as exclusive and capable as this rare and exciting G55 Cabriolet.
