Internally named W121, the Mercedes-Benz 190 was introduced in 1956, powered by the M121 1.9L inline-4 OHC gasoline engine. In 1958, Mercedes-Benz added diesel power to the lineup in the form of the OM621 diesel inline-4 engine rated at 50 HP at 4,000 RPM. In both gas and diesel configuration, these cars established a reputation for steadfast reliability, serving in numerous roles ranging from family transport to wide use in the taxi industry. In one exceedingly arduous test, Mercedes-Benz factory race driver Karl Kling and TV journalist Rainer Gunzler drove a 190D to a class win in the 1959 African Rally, covering a distance of 8,727 miles.
Along with other Mercedes-Benz models of the period, the 190 was among the first of the company’s so-called “Ponton” or Pontoon sedans, so named for the popular new styling development that eschewed the dated carriage-derived design in which the various exterior elements were separated into distinct pieces, instead unifying the body into a single cohesive form. Built on a 104-inch wheelbase, the 190/190D sedan featured solid body-on-frame construction, affording tremendous torsional strength that contributed a smooth ride through all-wheel independent suspension incorporating articulated rear axles and coil springs all around.
Exclusive to the shorter 4-cylinder cars were low-wattage parking clearance lights situated at the top rear of each front fender, operated by a simple left-right toggle switch at the lower left end of the dash. Interior accommodations were roomy and quite comfortable, with a padded dash, rubber mats and leather upholstery, all materials typical of Mercedes-Benz’s high quality. Finished in black with a well-preserved red interior, this 1958 Mercedes-Benz 190 sedan is powered by the 1.9L inline-4 engine mated to a column-shifted 4-speed manual transmission.
Generously equipped with chromed bumpers, Michelin radial tires, VDO gauges with a 100 MPH speedometer, in-dash clock and a Becker AM/FM radio, this 1958 190 is a charming example of one of the best-selling Mercedes-Benz models of the 1950s.
