Introduced for 2020, the outrageous Speedtail arrived as the fastest and most aerodynamically efficient road car that McLaren had ever built. Offered with 74 miles, this Speedtail is Car No. 85 of 106 individually specified examples produced. When it was delivered new to McLaren Scottsdale in February 2021, it was equipped with nearly $248,000 in exclusive options, including the optional MSO (McLaren Special Operations) roof-mounted air scoop, a $112,000 item alone. Designed with obsessive attention to airflow, the Speedtail’s teardrop-shaped, carbon-fiber body features an elongated tail for maximum aerodynamic efficiency.
The Hybrid powertrain combines a 723 HP twin-turbocharged 4.0L V-8 engine, an evolution of the McLaren P1 engine, with a parallel hybrid eMotor system, developed by McLaren’s Formula E technology group, that contributes 312 HP to the Speedtail’s total 1,035 HP power output. A Stealth titanium-finished exhaust system removed the V-8 engine’s spent combustion gases. A 7-speed Graziano dual-clutch transmission delivers the Speedtail’s massive power output, which is handled by an adjustable multilink suspension and race-derived active aerodynamic system. True to its name, the Speedtail is capable of electrifying performance, including a mind-bending 250 MPH top speed.
Echoing the legendary McLaren F1, the Speedtail features a competition-style carbon fiber central “tub” structure, including a three-seat cabin, central driver’s position and dramatic vertical dihedral doors. Velocity Mode lowers the suspension by 1.4 inches, adjusts the aerovane configuration, and even retracts the side-view cameras for increased stability at high speeds. Combined with MSO (McLaren Special Operations) personalization, including the MSO Fresno Valentina Violet paint finish, this 2020 Speedtail is handsomely complemented by a Vintage Tan full aniline leather interior, interior and exterior Magnetite trim, machined aluminum exterior badging and gloss-tinted carbon fiber.
