In 2007, the McLaren Formula One team secretly began development of a new road car project that would carry on from its earlier 3-person “McLaren F1” car from 1998. This new, road-going McLaren, however, would be completely designed and built in-house and would incorporate extensive use of carbon fiber and other technologies developed within McLaren’s winning F1 program. In 2011, the MP4-12C made its debut and set the automotive world alight. At its core, the MP4-12C featured an all-carbon-fiber tub, or MonoCell, that weighed just 175 lbs yet provided incredible strength and rigidity.
For power, the new MP4-12C featured a 3.7L twin-turbocharged V-8, jointly developed with racing engine manufacturer Ilmor that produced 616 HP and transmitted its power to the ground via a 7-speed “Seamless Shift” dual-clutch semi-automatic gearbox with paddle shifters. With such tremendous horsepower propelling just a 2,800-lb car, the McLaren MP4-12C was capable of rocketing from 0-60 MPH in a neck-snapping 2.8 seconds and a top speed of 215 MPH.
In addition to straight-line speed, the MP4-12C also boasted remarkable handling thanks to its unique “ProActive Chassis Control” suspension system that utilizes computer-controlled hydraulics, instead of conventional springs, dampers and anti-roll bars. The example offered at no reserve is a 2013 McLaren MP4-12C Coupe.
Finished in Gulf 24 Hour of Le Mans livery of Azure Blue and orange over a black Alcantara interior, some of the many special features on this very exclusive supercar include: power tilt and telescoping steering column, active rear spoiler, carbon fiber interior trim, center infotainment screen, selectable drive modes, rearview camera, automatic climate control, and split 5-spoke alloy wheels.
