The McLaren Elva is, without question, one of the most outlandish and evocative automobiles ever conceived, let alone ever to hit the road. If that claim sounds outlandish in itself, consider the name’s historical roots, which date back to the United States Road Racing Championship, which begat the legendary Can-Am racing series of the late 1960s and early ‘70s. The original McLaren Elva—the name derived from the French “elle va” (she goes)—was founder Bruce McLaren’s opening salvo in the Can-Am and the progenitor to the booming winged racers that soon thoroughly dominated that series and established the McLaren brand as a perennial winner.
As arguably the most daring machine in the modern McLaren lineup, this 2021 McLaren Elva roadster is certainly worthy of that history. Fresh at just 90 miles, its bespoke carbon fiber body is a featherweight envelope stretched tautly over a refined version of McLaren’s proprietary Monocell II chassis and finished in eye-popping Pacific Color Stream paint. The most startling visual aspect is the absence of a greenhouse of any form—no windshield, side or back glass at all. Twin prominent pods protect the occupants from behind, and an innovative vent in the nose rises at speed to project a curtain of air from in front to guide the oncoming breeze up and over the passengers.
Powered by a 4.0L/804 HP M840TR twin-turbocharged, quad-exhaust V-8 engine driving a paddle-shifted automatic transmission, the Elva employs McLaren’s typically advanced Proactive Chassis Control II, double-wishbone adaptive-damper suspension and sintered carbon ceramic ABS braking systems. Electro-hydraulic steering, auto-drag reduction and launch, traction and stability controls are all integrated into the Elva’s space-age handling suite.
Entering via carbon fiber dihedral doors, occupants are invited into the bespoke open cockpit to settle into carbon fiber seats upholstered and surrounded by black Ultrafabric upholstery; here is where the driving experience departs from other McLarens, with a panoramic view spanning the entire horizon as the scenery flies by.
