When a race car company decides to bring its technology and engineering to the streets, the result is a car like the McLaren 650S. Indeed, McLaren is a tried-and-true race car company with innumerable victories at tracks internationally, asserting itself as one of the most formidable racing companies the world has ever seen. The 650S was introduced at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show and while touted as being new, used 75% of the components from the MP4-12C, including the carbon fiber-reinforced polymer chassis and the twin-turbocharged 3.8L McLaren V-8 engine.
Despite all of the components the two cars shared, the 650S won hearts the world over as not only a stunning performer, but a spectacularly well-styled sports car. Interestingly, the process of building the 650S was very spacy, but what else would anyone expect from a race car company building cars for the street. It was exceedingly lightweight compared to many other exotic sports cars and offered spectacular performance, not just in off-the-line sprints, but top speed and actual handling as well. It was hugely well poised and balanced, and it felt like a race car. To boot, the car was beautifully engineered to be used as a daily driver, should an owner wish to do so.
The stylish all-LED headlights were touted as fuel saving, the dihedral doors offered aerodynamics to further aid in efficiency, and the retractable hardtop not only functioned with shocking efficiency, but helped to maintain a sweet center of gravity. This 2015 650S has cruised just 27,000 miles from new and is powered by the twin-turbocharged 3.8L/641 HP V-8 engine and 7-speed automatic transmission. It’s finished in matte black with black lightweight alloy wheels, and the yellow calipers of the disc brakes absolutely pop and chime in visually with the two-tone tan and black leather and suede interior.
Fitted with air conditioning and a Meridian sound system, occupants will adore the modern technology afforded them and the ability to drive effortlessly along in the daily commute; conversely, the 650S will quench driver’s thirst for track day easily.
