Estimate: €65,000 - €85,000 EUR

  • Maserati's second mid-engined road car
  • One of 626 original-series cars built
  • Recent servicing and maintenance
  • Registered in Monaco

Maserati followed-up its first mid-engined supercar - the Bora - with the similar Merak. Launched in 1972, the latter was intended as competition for Ferrari's top-selling Dino 246 and used a stretched, 3.0-litre, 190bhp version of the Citroën SM's four-cam V6. The French firm owned Maserati at the time so the Merak made use of the SM's transmission and power-operated, all-disc braking and - more controversially – Citroen's quirky instrumentation, though this applied to left-hand drive cars only, right-hand drive examples using the Bora's more conventional fascia.

The unitary construction chassis and all-independent suspension remained basically as the V8-engined Bora's, though the Merak offered the convenience of '+2' seating in the rear and superior all-round vision thanks to its distinctive rear 'flying buttresses'. Like any true thoroughbred, the Merak possessed handling commensurate with its breathtaking acceleration and 140mph-plus (225km/h-plus) maximum speed. The Merak was tested by Motor magazine in April 1974, attracting praise for its excellent handling and adhesion, striking appearance, ample accommodation for two, good performance, and lack of noise.

Competition from Ferrari's new Dino V8 prompted the introduction of a more powerful version - the Merak SS with 220bhp engine and revised, more conventional interior - for 1975, ZF transmission being adopted shortly thereafter. There was also a 2.0-litre Merak 2000 version, produced especially for the Italian market to take advantage of tax concessions. The most successful Maserati of its day, the Merak ceased production in 1983 after 1,809 examples had been built, 626 of which were the original version as seen here.

According to information supplied by Maserati Classiche, this Merak left the factory on 16th May 1973 and was delivered to its first owner in Bologna. The original colour combination was "rosso fuoco" (fire red) – the same it wears today - with beige velours interior. It is being described by the vendor as in generally very good condition. This early Merak was acquired in France by the current vendor in 2017. The history file's contents consist mainly of relatively recent service and maintenance invoices, the earliest being one issued by Garage Maion in Frejus for €4,920 relating to a service carried out on 23rd February 2018.

In September 2918, Garage Storic Italia in Marseille fitted a new battery, a new alternator, and a new electrical wiring harness, and also restored the fuel tank. Invoices in the file total around €10,000, and the car also comes with a condition report from Jean Pierre Cornu and a

Monaco registration certificate.

1973 Maserati Merak Berlinetta

Telaio nr. AM 122 0242
