Developed during the De Tomaso era, the Biturbo was unveiled in Modena in December 1981. An entirely new model, it was powered by a V6 with double overhead camshafts per cylinder bank, three valves per cylinder and two turbochargers. Its character was decidedly sporty, while the angular coupé’s styling was classic. Displacement and power would subsequently increase with the various model evolutions, which were also offered as a saloon and a convertible. The latter was developed by Zagato and named the “Spyder”.
The technical improvements to the 1985 Biturbo “II” (222), and the styling changes made to it by Marcello Gandini in 1988, also benefited the Spyder, which received a final design and technical overhaul in 1991. The ultimate evolution of the Biturbo convertible, with a 2-litre V6, double overhead camshafts and 24 valves (type AM475), the Spyder offered here is the most desirable. Finished in “sky blue” with a dark blue soft top and a grey half-leather, half-nubuck interior, together with a matching tonneau cover, it has a refined specification. The light wood trim and gold-finished dashboard clock add further elegance.
First registered in Italy in 1994, the car has been in the hands of its current owner for several years. A passionate enthusiast, he took all the necessary care to get the car back on the road; it had reportedly been in storage for around twelve years before he purchased it. The odometer now shows just under 50,000 km, which is very probably the original mileage, judging by the car’s excellent state of preservation. It is fitted with the superb 16-inch center-lock wheels specific to this version, a Blaupunkt radio and a wind deflector, as well as two occasional rear seats.
