Simply put, the 1991 Lotus Elan SE is a terrific sports car. Following the practice established early on by Lotus founder Colin Chapman, the Elan is built on a steel backbone frame, giving it incredible torsional rigidity and the consequent superb handling inherent in that design.

But the Elan departs from its kin in one very important respect: it is the only front drive Lotus ever made, a fact that initially displeased some in the automotive press but that proved to be one of the car’s best attributes, as it was soon dubbed “the finest front wheel drive car in the world, bar none.” Its Izuzu-built turbocharged 1.6 L/162 HP inline 4 engine is a smooth runner with ample torque always on hand, and a 5-speed manual gearbox gives it maximum flexibility on twisty back roads. Only 559 were produced for North America, making this sleek Yellow SE a genuine rarity.
