As the 1958 to 1960 Lincoln production rolled on, Ford began talking about shutting down the marque. Sales were sketchy, styling was questionable and the top brass weren’t happy. A change was needed, and it came by way of a Thunderbird concept proposal, which was said to have been too conservative to be a Thunderbird. Lincoln saw it and thought it would be perfect as the new 1961 Continental. Revising the sketches, the new Lincoln was born on paper and shown to the bosses who liked the car, but cautioned it must make a better impression. Indeed, it made an impression that sustained for decades after.
The 1961 to 1969 slabside Lincolns remain as one of the most desirable cars the division ever built and inspired Lincoln styling through the 1990s. Extensively customized by Smithy Customs of Houston, Texas, this 1963 Lincoln Continental Convertible is presented in Grey 8 paint applied by Painthouse in Houston and with a custom red leather interior by Aaron Davis of Innovative Rides, also in Houston. A supercharged GM LT4 6.2L V-8 engine is nestled into a highly detailed engine bay with an aluminum radiator chilled by twin electric cooling fans, and is backed by an 8-speed automatic transmission.
The chassis is set with a Currie 9-inch rear end, rack-and-pinion steering, Accuair suspension, Baer disc brakes with 13-inch cross-drilled and slotted rotors, and a Wilwood Hydrobooster, giving the car a spectacular stance and a much more modern driving feel. C10 wheels by Schott Wheels are wrapped with low profile Bridgestone tires, furthering the custom look and modern feel. The red interior features Dakota Digital gauges, Restomod Air and a custom sound system with components by RetroSound and JL Audio. Truly an exemplary custom Continental, this 1963 convertible is certain to turn heads and wow the crowds.
