1982 Land Rover Series III 88" Half-Ton Lightweight 4x4 Military Vehicle
Chassis no. SALLBBAH2AA176255
Engine no. 951224700
The Wilks brothers, Rover's bosses, had foreseen the need for a rugged four-wheel-drive utility vehicle to meet agricultural needs in the immediate post-war years. Given that it was inspired by the Jeep used during the war, it can hardly have surprised Rover when their small, versatile vehicle began to attract the interest of the British Army, which started taking delivery a year or two after production began in 1948. Perfectly adaptable to the Army's needs, the Land Rover fulfilled many different military roles, from combat vehicle to ambulance, and was exported to many countries around the world.
Introduced with the Series IIA, the so-called "lightweight" (half-ton) model was specially designed to be transported by the helicopters then in service with the British Armed Forces. The main modification compared with the standard model was that the vehicle was narrowed by 4 inches (101.6 mm), allowing two to be carried side by side in air transport, while much of the bodywork was made removable. The development of larger and more powerful transport aircraft and helicopters made the "lightweight" models obsolete, but the Army appreciated the simplicity of this stripped-down model, and it was adopted as the standard short-wheelbase military Land Rover.
Fully restored between 2016 and 2017, and offered from a prominent Belgian private collection, this example is sold with an instruction manual and its previous (Dutch) and current (Belgian) registration papers.

Rover bosses, the Wilks brothers, saw the need for a rugged four-wheel-drive utility vehicle to serve the needs of the agricultural community in the immediate post-war years. Given that its inspiration had been the wartime Jeep, it cannot have surprised Rover when their versatile vehicle also turned out to be of interest to the British Army, which began taking deliveries a year or two after production started in 1948. Supremely adaptable for military purposes, the Land Rover fulfilled any number of different military roles, from combat vehicle to ambulance, and was exported to countless countries worldwide.
Introduced with the Series IIA, the so-called lightweight (½-ton) model was specially adapted for transportation by the helicopters then in service with Britain's Armed Forces. The principal departure from standard specification was that the vehicle was narrowed by 4" (101.6 mm), enabling two to be carried side by side in air transport, while much of the body was made removable. The development of larger and more powerful transport aircraft and helicopters soon made the 'lightweight' specification redundant, but the British Army appreciated the model's stripped-down simplicity, and it was adopted as the standard short-wheelbase military Land Rover.
Fully restored between 2016 and 2017 and offered from a prominent Belgian private collection, this example comes with an instruction manual and its previous (Dutch) and current (Belgian) registration papers.
