Built with elegant aluminum coachwork by Carrozzeria Touring, this 1960 Lancia Flaminia GT convertible is one of only 421 produced. Named after the Via Flaminia, the road leading from Rome to Rimini, the Flaminia continued the Lancia tradition of naming new models after Italian roads. It was the first of a new-generation series designed under the guidance of Professor Antonio Fessia, designer of the Fiat 600, who had taken over as Lancia’s new technical director in 1957. In its original public showing at the Turin Auto Show in 1955, the first Flaminia showed off a pillarless coupe body with rear suicide doors by Pininfarina on a modified Aurelia chassis.
When Flaminia production began in 1957, the adapted Aurelia chassis remained, along with a modified version of the world’s first production V-6 engine, which was introduced in the Aurelia, a rear-mounted 4-speed manual transaxle mounted by semi-elliptical springs and a new Fessia-designed independent coil-spring front suspension replacing the traditional Lancia sliding pillar front suspension. The Flaminia’s 4-wheel disc brakes and radial tires were also significant developments.
While the Pininfarina-designed versions bore single headlights and retained a similarity to the Florida show cars, the GT coupes and convertibles wore this example’s stylish aluminum bodywork featuring newly fashionable quad headlights in distinctive touring-designed bezels.
Powered by the Lancia 2.5L V-6 using a single Solex twin-choke carburetor, this 1960 GT Flaminia convertible was recently refinished in attractive Grigio metallic paint and boasts a fresh matching gray interior with taut leather upholstery on the seats and door panels, immaculate gray carpeting and a color-matching metal dash with a Jaeger 5,000 RPM tachometer with integrated clock and 220 KPH speedometer with integrated fuel, water temperature, oil pressure and oil temperature gauges. The wood-rimmed three-spoke aluminum steering wheel completes the car’s sporty Italian ambience.
