Hailed by its maker as "a super sports car for day-to-day driving", the Gallardo was based on a styling proposal by Giorgetto Giugiaro's Italdesign with final refinements by Lamborghini's in-house team of designers, headed by Luc Donckerwolke. According to Lamborghini: "The vehicle's wheelbase and reduced overhangs give it a more dynamic look ... (while) the dimensions of the Gallardo and its performance goals lend it a compact sense of athleticism.
