If the XK120 was greeted with disbelief, it’s because what it did seemed impossible. The 132.6 MPH record it set in 1949 was extraordinary, and here was a $4,000 version for the street that promised near-identical performance. An Aston-Martin DB2 offered comparable performance, but for 50 percent more, and a Ferrari was twice that. Still emerging from the ruin of the War, Jaguar managed to construct only a single prototype XK120 for the 1948 Earl’s Court show, more as a showcase for its new twin-cam engine. The “120” was for 120 MPH, but it hadn’t done that yet, and privately, 100 MPH would have satisfied Jaguar.
It wasn’t the engine that astonished the crowds, however, but the body, designed in a hurry and arguably the most modern sports car design in the world. Both Jaguar testing and privateer racing soon proved the soundness of the XK120, and sales to America soon provided not just vital cash for Jaguar, but a point of pride for all of Britain. The original XK120 was an Open Two-Seater Roadster, and it remained the purest and most sporting-focused of all models. Even so, its equipment and amenities made it uniquely comfortable among sports cars. That same specification makes restoration demanding and expensive, and fully restored cars are sought-after.
Examination of this car reveals a nut-and-bolt restoration, with detailed undercarriage and engine compartment, new Red exterior, Black cloth top, and new Tan interior. Attention to detail shows in a restored tool kit, jack, spare wheel and side curtains. Chrome wire wheels are correctly not covered with rear spats, and it is equipped with wide whitewall tires, dual mirrors, chrome marker lamps and Lucas driving lights.
