In 2001 Sir Paul Smith the fashion designer, Vogue Magazine and Jaguar joined forces to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support. This X-TYPE was auctioned on behalf of the charity in the presence of His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales at a spectacular celebrity party held at Waddesdon Manor, Buckinghamshire. Guests at the event included Kylie Minogue, Sir Elton John, Jaguar Formula One driver Eddie Irvine. The event was a huge success raising more than £200,000 for the charity. The car was bought at the auction by City banker Zoe Appleyard and her friend Maya Schonburg.
Sir Paul Smith said: "It was fantastic to work on the Jaguar X-TYPE project. Its simple, clean lines work beautifully with my idea of the unique Paul Smith stripes running front to back."
Jaguar chairman at the time, Dr Wolfgang Reitzle, said: "Jaguar is synonymous with style, so our involvement with Vogue is very fitting. We are also delighted to raise significant funds for Macmillan Cancer Relief by creating a unique X-TYPE with Sir Paul Smith."
The Jaguar X Type was in production between 2001 and 2009. There were two engine options, both petrol, they were the V6 with 2.5 litre and 3.0 litre variants. It was described by Jaguar as a "compact executive car' since it was smaller than any of their previous offerings.
The Paul Smith car has the V6 2.5 litre engine and is a standard model, apart of course from the distinctive paint job , and comes with automatic transmission and a black leather interior . The registration number also comes with the car and clearly has value in its own right. With 50,000 miles on the clock and no known mechanical gremlins lurking around, this is a most unusual car with a very unusual history.
It is fitting that once again it is up for sale at a charity auction. There is no doubt that it will attract attention wherever it goes!
