The original Jaguar E-Type was judged sensational upon its 1961 debut, but its DOHC inline-6 engine, an impressive powerplant in both Series I and Series II incarnations, was no match for the ever-expanding regime of government emissions regulations. Fortunately, Jaguar had another arrow in its quiver, and in 1971 they trotted out a brand-new and long-awaited E-Type packing the V-12 engine that powered its sedans.
Visually identified by its longer wheelbase, flared fenders and a fresh front-end treatment featuring a larger grille for improved cooling and open headlights, the Series III E-Type inherited the confident handling of its forerunners while benefiting from the V-12’s extra torque and turbine smoothness. Purchased new in Walnut Creek, California, this 1972 Series III Jaguar E-Type convertible is an unrestored one-owner example driven just 37,800 miles.
In addition to its original 5.3 L/272 HP V-12 engine and 4-speed manual transmission, it is equipped with all independent suspension, four-wheel disc brakes, air conditioning, a fiberglass hardtop, chromed wire wheels and a Blaupunkt AM/FM radio. Having been in storage from 1986 until 2015, it was last registered for the road in 1987. It has been prepared for the next chapter of its life with an overall service that included new hoses, fuel lines and fluids, an oil and filter change and new Whitewall radial tires.
This well-preserved V-12 E-Type is finished in Signal Red with a handsome Biscuit interior and is offered with the original sales contract and purchase order, window sticker and dealer addendum and books, brochures and tools.
