Sensational even at a standstill, the most feline of all Jaguars was also sensationally quick, with magazine road tests confirming the near 150 MPH top speed of the new E-Type when it made its show-stopping debut at the March 1961 Geneva Motor Show. Facing fast-growing waiting lists and demand way beyond expectations for what had been conceived as a low-volume prestige model, Jaguar had to gear up quick and develop the car on the hoof. Over the course of what’s now known as the Series 1 E-Type, the famed 3.8L 6-cylinder XK engine that had powered C- and D-Type Le Mans winners grew to 4.2L, and though still rated at the same 265 HP, had better bottom end torque and midrange pickup.
There was also a new full synchromesh gearbox, electrics were now via alternator, and the seats were broader in the back and more comfortable. For many E-Type devotees, the S1 is the purest expression of the form, for with the S2 of 1969, compromises driven by U.S. federal regulations took hold. The engine on U.S. cars was derated and the purity of line of the covered-headlamp S1 was diluted with protruding open headlamps and larger, raised rear light clusters. However, for the 1968 model year Jaguar produced an interim version. Though not officially designated as such, the Series 1.5 combined S1 and S2 features.
As evidenced by its chassis number, this striking all-black 1968 E-Type previously owned by former world tennis No. 1 Lindsay Davenport is a Series 1.5. The rocker switches on the vinyl-clad instrument panel are one identifier, while the neater S1-style auxiliary lamp clusters another. Comprehensively restored with photo records, it also incorporates signature features that are key to the aesthetics and appeal of the original S1. Among the most notable visual aspects are the covered headlamps which contributed so much to the E-Type’s sheer unadorned beauty. Equally important is what’s under the hood.
The S2’s power and pace was significantly muted by the twin carburetors installed to meet U.S. emissions regs. This car, however, has the full-house 4.2L triple-carb SU as fitted to later Series 1 cars. As such, both in driving terms and aesthetics, this Series 1.5 hits a sweet spot, benefiting from the evolutionary enhancements made to the S1 without what some feel are the compromises that came with the S2.
