Rightly considered one of the most desirable and influential sports cars ever produced, Jaguar’s beautiful and potent E-Type debuted to widespread acclaim at Geneva in March 1961. Steady updates and improvements defined its long production run along three distinct evolutions through 1974. In addition to select refinements including improved creature comforts soon following its 1961 debut, major updates by autumn 1964 included an engine-displacement increase to 4.2L and a welcome switch to a new, smoother-shifting full-synchromesh gearbox.
Featuring sleek Perspex-covered headlamps and retaining their fabulous original styling cues including fine, unobtrusive split chrome bumpers, 4.2L Series I cars were produced into 1967, when a series of running changes were ushered in, keeping the design compliant with tightening federal standards in Jaguar’s important North American markets. Sporting a rotisserie restoration, this late-Series I specimen is a vision in its Opalescent Silver Gray exterior finish, which is complemented by a blue leather interior, aerodynamic Perspex headlight covers and elemental split chrome bumpers.
Power and performance are delivered by a triple-carbureted DOHC 4.2L inline 6-cylinder engine paired with a 4-speed manual transmission and harnessed by 4-wheel disc brakes and an independent suspension system. Other choice highlights of this sporting icon include Smiths instruments, dual exhaust and 15-inch chrome wire wheels wrapped in Vredestein Sport Classic tires. Featuring potent triple-carbureted DOHC 4.2L engines and an improved and easier-to-operate gearbox, plus other select refinements, the late-production Series I cars of 1964-67 are rightly prized among today’s collectors and enthusiasts.
Unlike any other classic sports car, these very special E-Types remain highly coveted for their renowned driving dynamics and electrifying all-around performance, coupled with their achingly beautiful, projectile-like styling and competition-derived body design. This example provides a compelling way to share in the experience.
