Jaguar Cars dominated international road racing in Europe during the 1950s, its success culminating in no fewer than five overall wins in the 24 Hours of Le Mans from 1951 to 1957, the last three in the spectacularly advanced D-Type, which incorporated such innovations as a monocoque central tub with front and rear subframes and all-wheel Dunlop disc brakes derived from World War II aircraft. The D-Type’s mechanical advances, as well as wind-cheating body work designed by aerodynamicist Frank Costin, served as the inspiration for the hauntingly beautiful and equally ground-breaking E-Type unveiled at the 1961 Geneva Auto Salon to international acclaim.
Jaguar purists still revere the original Series I version, which featured slim front and rear bumpers, knock-off wire wheels and covered headlights, qualities that disappeared in later versions subjected to government mandates. An original Southern California Black Plate car, this 1965 Jaguar E-Type Series I Roadster’s history includes long-term care by a Jaguar Club of North America Chief Judge. Presenting in the very desirable color combination of red with a tan soft top, matching top boot and tan leather interior, it includes the features that attract discerning collectors, including door and console armrests, Smiths instrumentation, early model toggle switches and an AM/FM radio.
Power comes from Jaguar’s famously refined and powerful 4.2L dual overhead cam inline 6-cylinder engine with triple SU carburetors and dual exhaust in concert with a 4-speed synchronized manual transmission. All-independent suspension, Coker Universal Sport redline radial tires on chromed knock-off wire wheels and 4-wheel disc brakes provide the supple ride and surefooted handling for which the E-Type is rightly celebrated. This handsome, well-presented Series I roadster was recently serviced by noted Jaguar specialists Classic Showcase of Oceanside, California, and comes with a Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust Certificate.
