To experience an early E-Type is to connect with a moment in time when Jaguar stunned the world with something so visceral, elemental and pure that even an envious Enzo Ferrari had to concede it was “the most beautiful car ever made.” When introduced at the 1961 Geneva Motor Show, the Jaguar had already proven its performance was as sensational as its looks. A roadster had already been clocked at 149.1 MPH, while the even slipperier fixed-head coupe had notched up 150.4 MPH.
Conceived as a follow-on to the Le Mans-winning D-Type, its racing DNA was refined for road use with the sublime body form sculpted by aerodynamicist Malcolm Sayer and a road-going 265 HP version of the famed triple-carburetor 3.8L twin overhead-cam alloy-headed inline-6. All-around disc brakes were cutting edge for a road car, and those unique triple windshield wipers induced small boys to barely containable excitement. As a 1962 car, produced just one year into its production run, this 1962 Jaguar E-Type Series I Fixed Head Coupe possesses all the first-of-line purity.
There’s the covered headlights, bumpers slimmer than a cad’s pencil moustache and delicate auxiliary lighting nacelles streamlined and harmonized into the body. All these deft touches ultimately fell afoul of U.S. federal regulations. On the interior, the aluminum dash panel and flight-deck-style toggle switches are another signature of the original. The factory-correct, slim-line, racing-style “shovel back” bucket seats seen here also later gave way to bulkier affairs.
The very earliest so-called “flat-floor” models with external hood catches might represent the Holy Grail, but the flat floor was a flaw that was soon ironed out, and this example has the deeper foot wells that allow taller drivers to get behind the wheel. Between 1961 and 1964 just 5,871 E-Type fixed-head coupes were made in left-hand drive like this one. How rare and exciting a sight this car must have been in 1962 is attested to by its early VIN. Left-hand drive chassis numbers began at 885001.
Powered by a matching-numbers 3.8L/265 HP inline-6 with triple SU carburetors and a 4-speed manual transmission, this E-Type is a notably early car bearing the number 888250 and, therefore, one of the first 3,000 left-hand drive coupes to hit the road anywhere in the world.
