This 1954 GMC Bus is a re-creation of the "Transit Bus" as seen on "The Honeymooners" television series that aired from 1955 to 1956. The General Motors TDH-4512 was a 35-foot public-transit bus built from 1953 to 1959 in the United States. Robust production totaled 3,263 units built for United States and Canadian operators and saw widespread use across both countries. This definitive bus is known to enthusiasts as the "Old Look" style, rooted in the model TG-3201 bus introduced in 1940 by Yellow Coach, partially owned by General Motors, which eventually purchased that company outright in 1943, with the Yellow Coach name dropped completely in 1944.
Production of most "Old-Look" models ended when GM released its aptly named "New-Look" buses in 1959. However, some smaller "Old-Look" models continued in production until 1969. Approximately 38,000 "Old-Look" buses were built during the 29-year production run. Emulating a bus that would surely have been driven by Jackie Gleason's Ralph Kramden character on TV's "The Honeymooners," this 1954 GMC Model 4512 is a logical component of the wonderfully curated TV and movie-vehicle collection of Dr. Stewart Berkowitz.
Fascinating documents accompanying the vehicle include a copy of the 1973-issued Connecticut Certificate of Title, issued when the Northeast Transportation Co. acquired the vehicle from Wilson Bus Sales, Inc. of East Templeton, MA. In January 2012, the bus was acquired by Joe DeSantis, who sold it to Dr. Berkowitz in September 2020. Other paperwork includes a 1980-dated State of Connecticut Department of Transportation certificate authorizing the operation of the bus with a seating capacity of 41 passengers plus 10 standing passengers. A 1980-dated permit from the State of Connecticut Public Utilities Commission authorized its operation as a Motor Bus.
Finished in light blue and white with "Honeymooners" slogans added to the upper windows, this 1954 GMC Model 4512 celebrates one of the most-recognized and longest-running public transit vehicles of the 20th century and "The Honeymooners," one of the best-loved TV sitcoms ever produced.
