Many people do not realize that both Chevrolet and GMC built the Suburban for quite some time as sister models. Chevrolet introduced the Suburban in 1935, with GMC following in its footsteps two years later, in time for the 1937 model year. The early vehicles were an interesting amalgamation of parts and unique in nature. The Suburban’s pickup truck front end and chassis combined with a station wagon body to set it apart from both cars and trucks of the 1930s. General Motors was not the first nor the only company to use the Suburban name, but eventually all other companies ceased using the name and the Detroit giant received an exclusive trademark.
The 1935 Chevrolet Model EB Suburban, with its modest 112-inch wheelbase, is considered by many to be the first sport utility vehicle. This was decades before SUV became a well-known term, but there is no doubt that the Suburban fulfilled the basic mission of car comfort with truck utility. The Suburban grew in both cargo space and wheelbase over time, adding niceties as sleeker styling and a Hydra-Matic transmission option. This 1953 GMC Suburban was custom built on an all-steel body by N&S Classics in Mesa, Arizona. The custom Black paint Black with faux wood airbrushing by Joel Nelson makes the Suburban stand out in a crowd.
Powered by a 1955 inline-6 engine mated to a 3-speed manual transmission, the Suburban features power disc brakes, new glass, new seals and gaskets, Ididit tilt column, third-row seating, a sun visor, fender skirts, a new chrome grille, painted steel wheels and wide Whitewall tires.
