Thanks to emissions and safety standards dissolving the performance era, many manufacturers turned to luxury accoutrements and radically-styled stripes and paint by 1972 to make their cars more attractive. Ford introduced a restyled Gran Torino that year and largely followed the mantra of "coddle thy customers" with luxury and performance. Make no mistake, a Gran Torino could still boogie, but even the 429 cubic inch engine had been reduced to just a few ponies over 200 HP. Using many of the design cues from the previous year, the 1972 Gran Torino was vastly improved with stout body-on-frame construction supplanting the previous unitary design.
Using 14 massive rubber isolators to reduce noise, vibration and harshness as well as torque boxes, five solid cross members and an “S” shaped front end for improved safety and energy absorption, the entire package added up to one of the most isolated rides available. The 14 Gran Torino models available in 1971 were simplified to nine including a Coupe, Sedan and Station Wagon. No more convertibles were offered, again, appeasing the safety scouts. Engine choices were plentiful with 302, 351, 400 and 429 CI V-8s available for the picking, most with 2V carburetors but 4V availability. Dearborn hit the nail on the head, and sales surpassed 500,000 units.
This 1972 Gran Torino Sport is an unrestored one-owner car with a magnificently straight and ding-free body in light blue with dark blue accent stripes. Exemplary of the luxury and performance blend Ford was pushing in the 1970s, it has the original 351 cubic inch V-8 engine joined to an automatic transmission with conveniences such as power steering, power brakes, power windows and power locks. The interior is tan and blue and features bucket seats, a center console and a T-shifter for the transmission. BF Goodrich with raised white lettering tires wrap Magnum 500 wheels and the chrome, trim and glass are in very good condition.
