The year 1969 proved to be the pinnacle of Ford’s success in NASCAR competition, thanks in no small part to its specialized entry, the Torino Talladega. Stock-bodied SportsRoof Torinos had proven successful in 1968 competition, scoring 27 wins in 49 races, but with new rules slowing engine development, Ford turned to aerodynamics and Holman-Moody to maintain its edge for 1969. Named after the newly opened Alabama superspeedway, the Torino Talladega was designed by Holman-Moody and Ford engineers in a Ford wind tunnel. Its nose, popularly referred to as a “droop snoot,” was extended approximately 6 inches and sloped downward at a 30-degree angle; the fenders were likewise extended.
The recessed grille and headlights were mounted flush with the hood’s leading edge to smooth airflow, and a Fairlane rear bumper was modified and mounted low to reduce lift. Finally, the rockers were reshaped and lowered in another effort to reduce under-car airflow. All these modifications were then applied to a limited run of 750 street model Torino Talladega coupes, which have become among the most collectible Fords of NASCAR’s brief but memorable “aero wars” period. Sold new at Montgomery Motors in Troy, North Carolina, this 1969 Talladega is sharply finished in Maroon with a matte black hood accent and black bench seat interior.
Ford’s potent Q-code 428/335 HP Cobra Jet engine supplies the power, working through a column-shifted C6 3-speed automatic transmission. Well-chosen optional equipment includes power steering and power brakes with front discs, an engine oil cooler, bench seats with front headrests, a tinted windshield, a pushbutton radio and Dunlop radial tires. This rare and handsome one-year-only NASCAR homologation special is listed in the Talladega Spoiler Registry and accompanied by spare keys.
