For 1966, Thunderbird faced increasing competition from the Buick Riviera and Oldsmobile’s striking new Toronado, pressuring Ford to take the T-Bird line a bit more up-market. As such, the new Town Hardtop and Town Landau models were introduced with formal vinyl roofs covering the rear quarter windows, landau bars and interior overhead consoles. Exterior styling was modified taking cues from the overwhelmingly popular Mustang, though 1966 marked the final year of the “square bird” with the novel sequential turn signals and the last time a convertible would be offered until 2002.

This is one of just 5,049 convertibles produced for 1966 of a total Thunderbird production of 69,176 units. Equipped with the 390-cid V-8 and Cruise-O-Matic automatic transmission, this Emberglo over beige leather example is equipped with power steering, brakes, antenna and convertible roof along with air conditioning, an AM radio and a sports roadster tonneau.
