This rare 1969 Boss 429 Mustang may look stock on the outside but it has been updated in a number of areas for improved performance, starting with the hemi-head Boss 429 engine that has been stroked to 521 CI and topped by an aftermarket aluminum intake with dual-quad induction. Carrying KK No. 1393 as the 193rd Boss 429 Mustang produced, the Royal Maroon Fastback is also equipped with a Mustang II front suspension, rack-and-pinion steering, rear panhard bar and traction bars. External additions include the rear-window slats, rear spoiler, driving lights behind the grille and Goodyear Eagle GT tires, while a wood-rim steering wheel has been added to the black Deluxe interior.
Like all Boss 429s, this one is equipped with a 4-speed manual transmission, 9-inch rear end with 3.91 gears in a Traction-Lok differential, front disc brakes and trunk-mounted battery. Ford built the Boss 429 for two model years, 1969-70, to legalize the race-inspired engine for NASCAR competition. Only 849 were built for 1969. From the factory, the Boss 429 was the ultimate Mustang muscle car. Because the massive aluminum-head big-block was too wide for the Mustang’s engine compartment, the final build was farmed out to Ford’s contracted performance shop, Kar Kraft, where the engine was lowered into place between modified shock towers.
All came with Competition Suspension and staggered rear shocks to control wheel hop during hard acceleration. Compared to other muscle cars of the late 1960s, the Boss 429 exterior was subtle with only a manually operated hood scoop, front chin spoiler, 15-inch Magnum 500 wheels and small front-fender decals setting it apart from regular Mustang Fastbacks. Every Boss 429 received a unique decal on the driver’s door with its “KK NASCAR 429” serial number. KK No. 1393 comes with a Marti Report and two shipping invoices.
