Considering that real Ford GT40 race cars are rare with most surviving examples locked away in collections or displayed in museums, a replica is certainly the way to go for anyone who wants to enjoy the pleasures of driving and being seen in one of Ford’s most famous sports cars. This Ford GT40 Replica was built to represent the Gulf-sponsored racing GT40 that won the 1968 24 Hours of Le Mans. As such, its fiberglass body—handmade by Chris Ardern from Active Power—is painted in the famous blue and orange Gulf livery with #6 roundels like the Le Mans-winning car.
Driven just 100 miles since completion, the GT40 replica is powered by a rear-mounted Ford Racing 302 CI engine that sends its power to the rear wheels via a Getrag 6-speed manual transaxle from a 996-generation Porsche 911. In addition to the iconic GT40 “bundle-of-snakes” headers that exit through Magnaflow mufflers, the powerplant is equipped with aluminum cylinder heads, Edelbrock 650-cfm carburetor, MSD electronic ignition and Aviad road-racing oil pan. A front-mounted aluminum radiator with dual electric fans draws cooling air through the vented front hood.
The Corvette-style independent suspension utilizes QA1 adjustable coilovers, 4-wheel disc brakes and 17-inch wheels similar to the Halibrands used on the original cars. The low-slung interior provides a race car experience with Intatrim fixed-back bucket seats covered by black leather with ring grommets, OMP 4-point racing harnesses, center-mounted switch panel, dash-mounted ignition switch, Microsuede Momo steering wheel, Wilwood pedals, and billet shifter with carbon-fiber knob. Speedhut instruments include a tachometer, reverse-sweep 180-MPH GPS speedometer and an array of gauges for fuel pressure, fuel level, coolant temperature, oil pressure and battery voltage.
Unlike the original GT40s, this replica is equipped with air conditioning. The sale includes a binder of receipts to document its build.
