Named after the original GT MK II that won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1966, Ford debuted its ultimate track car at the 2019 Goodwood Festival of Speed in West Sussex, England. In designing the track-only GT MK II, Ford Performance worked with Multimatic to apply everything it had learned from FIA World Championship and International Motor Sports Association competition.
Only this time, it would not be constrained by the rules and regulations of any world racing series. “The GT Mk II unleashes the full performance potential of the Ford GT without any artificial performance limitations dictated by racing sanctioning bodies,” said Hau Thai-Tang, Ford chief product development and purchasing officer in a press release at the car’s launch. “It’s the closest GT owners can get to the Le Mans-winning performance and exhilarating feeling of crossing the finish line in the Ford GT race car.”
Cradled in the steel and aluminum substructures of the carbon-fiber body tub is a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 engine tuned to a reported 700 horsepower, 53 horsepower more than the roadgoing GT and nearly 200 horsepower more than the competition racecars. Transferring all that power to the GT MK II-specific, 19-inch Forgeline alloy wheels is the same seven-speed Getrag 7DCL750 dual-clutch transaxle from the GT road car, albeit with seriously beefed-up internals. The engine and fluids are cooled through a roof-mounted intake scoop in conjunction with a water sprayer system to reduce intercooler temperatures, a setup similar to that of the Porsche 911 GT2 RS.
The most eye-catching change is the massive, dual-element, fixed rear wing, which replaces the standard car’s active unit and is said to exceed the downforce of even the one found on the racecars. Ford claims the GT MK II creates 400% more downforce than the civilian GT and pulls over 2.0 g of lateral grip. Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes are at all four corners, with 15.5-inch-diameter units up front and 14.1-inch units out back.
The interior has been stripped and race-prepped with a carbon-fiber racing steering wheel flanked by new controls on a simple dashboard. An FIA-certified, GT MK II-specific Sparco racing seat cradles the driver, while a corresponding Sparco passenger seat is optional. The cabin is protected with an FIA-compliant roll cage featuring a six-point Sparco racing harness and fire-suppression system.
Production was limited to just 45 vehicles, ensuring ultimate exclusivity for all time.
The single-owner example offered here, serial number 031, has never seen track time and hardly been driven at all, showing only 27.3 miles on the odometer at cataloguing time, accrued during the shortest of stints in the driveway to ensure proper function and maintenance. Finished in white with an exposed carbon-fiber center stripe and blue accents, it features one-off, custom livery evident on the rear wing. The Forgeline wheels are finished in Satin Graphite.
Notably, this Ford GT Mk II was fitted from new with more than $134,000 in factory options designed to maximize the driving experience. These include the passenger seat kit, cooling suit, Motec V2 camera, onboard air-jack system, Mk II code reader, HD dive planes, and paint protection film. In addition, the car is accompanied by the optional silenced exhaust system, yet to be installed, as well as safety stands for the air-jack system, a spare set of factory wheels with tires mounted, and a spare set of Michelin racing slicks.
