Talk about a big presence. This 1968 Ford Galaxie XL GT Convertible—one of one produced with this specific option combination—features a fire-breathing factory Q-Code 428 CI V-8 engine backed by a row-it-yourself 4-speed manual transmission. A highly optioned car, this Galaxie XL GT is the only example finished in Meadowlark paint and comes equipped with its factory wheels and whitewall tires. Formerly part of Ford specialist Mike Patak’s Collection out of Blair, Nebraska, the Galaxie XL GT features a spacious black interior with wide front bucket seats. Both inside and out, it definitely has the overall presence to conquer the open road in comfort and style.
The Galaxie XL GT convertible was a part of the “Total Performance” global Ford Motor Company advertising campaign during the 1960s. The Blue Oval’s goal was to win races on Sunday and sell cars on Monday. Mainstream vehicles like the Galaxie, Fairlane and Falcon were restyled with squared-off aggressive designs to emphasize their new performance chops and tie them back to the Ford cars that were winning races. The Galaxie XL GT convertible models fell in line with the performance mantra with unique styling that included hidden headlights and a long-hood, short-deck style combined with the high-performance Q-Code 428 CI V-8 engine.
New safety features for the 1968 Galaxies included side marker lights and shoulder belts, as well as a soft bar that runs through the diameter of the wheel. The full-size Galaxies were produced from the 1959 to 1974. When the Galaxie debuted, the name was an attempt to cash in on the excitement sweeping America over the Space Race. This particular 1968 Galaxie XL GT Convertible demonstrates those exciting times nicely with its unique brand of majestic drop-top performance. It has been professionally detailed and comes with a Marti Report that confirms the incredible rarity of this car.
