During the early 1950s, while the Ford models certainly sold well and provided strong value, styling was quite conservative, and the Flathead V-8 reached its development peak. Clearly, a dose of innovation was in order. Following introduction of the all-new “Y-Block” V-8 engine for 1954, the 1955 Ford models were completely redesigned with longer, lower and wider bodies, two-tone finishes, distinctive brightwork and striking interiors. Along with a mild restyle for 1956, other changes included Ford’s new “Lifeguard Design” safety features, which comprised dished steering wheels, improved door latches and breakaway rear-view mirrors, while a padded dash and seat belts remained optional.
As expected, the top-line Fairlane series was very successful, and with it, Ford consolidated its market position during the challenging 1956 model year. Horsepower was a major sales driver as well, and in response to Chevrolet’s widening “small-block” high-performance engine choices, Ford expanded its V-8 lineup for 1956 with the 300 bhp, competition-oriented “F-Code” 312 V-8 with a McCulloch supercharger and the naturally-aspirated 270 bhp “E-Code” version with dual Holley four-barrel carburetors.
This highly equipped 1956 Fairlane Victoria Coupe features a 1957 “E-Code” dual-carbureted 312 V-8, which according to the owner was dealer-installed in late 1956. The car features an optional three-speed manual transmission with overdrive and the original interior, which is equipped with seat belts. Amber fog lamps, wire-spoke wheel covers, bright fender stone guards, rear-fender skirts and a “Continental” kit accent the striking two-tone red and white paint finish. With the exhaust note of its powerful “E-Code” V-8 enhanced by “Smithy” pipes, this stunning Victoria is a terrific example from a landmark Ford model year.
