Thankfully, the Raptor was no mere "badge and sticker package." It was extensively redesigned to handle high-performance off roading. The Raptor features long-travel A-arm suspension, special Fox Racing remote reservoir dampers, huge BF Goodrich KO tires, and a Trophy Truck-inspired widebody treatment – necessary as the Raptor is a full seven inches wider than standard. With an optional 411bhp V8 on the original version, the Raptor was designed to be as fast off road as it was on, and as evidenced by its sales success, SVT got the formula right from the word go.
The third generation Raptor arrived in 2021, with standard trucks coming with a not-insignificant 450bhp 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6. Meanwhile, over at FCA/Stellantis, the Ram TRX hit the trails, with a headline-stealing 700bhp Hellcat V8. Not wanting to be outdone, Ford responded with the astonishing Raptor R, powered by a 5.2-liter supercharged 'Carnivore' V8 from the Shelby GT500. Packing 700bhp and 645lb-ft of torque, an even racier 5-link coil-sprung rear axle, and special details, the Raptor R shows the original is still the best, and that the one that started the modern 'supertruck' category is still the one to beat.
