Previously owned and restored by Tim Mattson of Mattson Street Rods in Morro Bay, California, this 1951 Ford Woody Wagon subtly blends the classic woody appearance and Rodder’s touch with exceptional balance. The proof is in the pudding, as this Woody took First Place at not only the Oakhurst Hot Rod Auto Show in 2000, but the Classic at Pismo Beach Car Show “Endless Summer” in 2006, the Santa Cruz Woodies on the Wharf in 2006, and the Cambria Pinedorado Days Classic Car Show in 2018 as well.
The body is set on a chassis equipped with upgraded suspension components that provide a lowered stance, while painted steel wheels adorned with polished trim rings and hubcaps and shod with blackwall tires round out the more muscular look. The custom red paint highlights and accentuates the restored exterior mahogany panels and maple trim, both of which are similarly stained. Under the hood, a 383 CI V-8 stroker engine is well dressed with aluminum and brightwork, nestled into an engine bay that’s been finished to match the body, and topped with a B&M supercharger, Holley 4-barrel carburetor and a finned aluminum air cleaner that matches the rocker arm covers.
An automatic transmission with a B&M shifter is paired with the engine, a Mallory ignition provides the spark, and things are kept cool with an upgraded radiator with fan. The interior is fitted with new German-weave carpeting and matching mats, with tan leather upholstery covering the seats. The door panels are made of mahogany, while the wood-grained dashboard is made of Tiger Stripe Maple. Rear views are courtesy of a custom wooden mirror shaped like a surfboard, and tunes are provided by an upgraded Sirius-capable stereo system. The spare tire is kept in a rear-mounted metal case.
While this 1951 Ford Woody Wagon is obviously not as delivered by the factory, the Yin and Yang between factory correct and custom are remarkable indeed.
