With a 594cc 2-cylinder engine and a 4-speed manual transmission, this 1967 Fiat Abarth 595 Coupe is finished in white with a rollback checker-patterned sunroof and rolls on Falken tires with eight-spoke wheels centered with Abarth caps. The interior features red and black upholstery on the seats and door panels, and the black carpeting is piped in red to match. The seatbacks feature the Abarth logo, and a sport steering wheel furthers the racy feel. Born in Vienna, Austria-Hungary, Karl Albert Abarth became a naturalized Italian citizen in 1934, changing his name to Carlo Alberto Abarth. In his teens, he worked for Castagna in Italy, designing motorcycle and bicycle chassis.

A very successful motorcycle racer, he earned the European champion award five times. Using a sidecar motorcycle, he won a race against the Orient Express train on an 810-mile route between Vienna and Ostend. With performance in his blood, Abarth was always marketing custom intake and exhaust systems, particularly for less expensive cars like Fiats. His components and tuning methods could turn the average Fiat into a remarkably quick vehicle, and soon he was tuning Fiats for the factory, creating race cars and street cars that were known as being giant killers.

The Fiat Abarth 595 was one of the most popular and successful ever made, largely influenced by his desire to create “a sportscar within everybody’s means.” Based on the Fiat 500 D, Abarth implemented a number of mechanical improvements to conjure additional horsepower from the small engines, such as special cylinder castings and polishing the exhaust ports and manifold pipes. A revised cam was installed along with a special oil pump, new valve springs, specially designed pistons, rods and crankshaft, all to enhance durability and expand the range of power delivery. The upgrades cut the acceleration of the 500 D in half and promised a top speed of about 75 MPH.

The lower, stiffer springs and wider tires aided handling, and the entire package delivered a kind of Jekyll and Hyde personality—a sporting car for the street or track.
