FIAT's new 131 Mirafiori medium-size saloon made its debut at the Turin Motor Show in October 1974, replacing the 124. A classic 'three-box' front-engine rear-drive design, the 131 was initially offered with 1.3- and 1.6-litre overhead-valve four-cylinder engines, while Aurelio Lampredi's famous twin-cam unit became available later in some of the more sporting variants. Suspension was independent at the front by means of MacPherson struts, with an exceptionally well-located coil-sprung live axle at the rear. Disc brakes were fitted at the front, drums at the rear. There were no fewer than 11 models on offer to begin with based on three different body styles: two-door saloon, four-door saloon, and a Familiare station wagon.
The 131 received a minor facelift in 1978, a revision that coincided with the Lampredi twin-cam engine's introduction. These Series 2 models featured larger rectangular front lights (four round headlights in the USA), new bumpers, larger rear lights, and revised interior trim. An addition to the range was the Racing two-door sports saloon, powered by the 2.0-litre twin-cam engine producing 113bhp (115PS). This new model featured four round headlights (the inner lights smaller than the outer ones) together with a different grille, front chin spoiler, flared wheelarches, and a five-speed manual gearbox. The Racing had top speed of 180km/h (110mph).
Finished in grey with black interior, this 131 Racing is nicely presented both inside and out but shows some minor rust spots on close inspection. The paintwork is nice, but the engine bay would benefit from a thorough clean and detailing/repainting, and the rear bumper needs to be changed. Bonhams has driven the Racing a short distance and it performed really well. The car comes complete with its spare wheel and is offered with sundry invoices, French Carte Grise and valid contrôle technique.

La 131 reçut de légères retouches en 1978, modifications qui coïncidaient avec l'arrivée du moteur double arbre Lampredi. Cette série 2 arborait de grands phares rectangulaires (quatre phares ronds aux États-Unis), de nouveaux pare-chocs, des feux arrière plus grands et de nouvelles garnitures intérieures. En plus des modèles de la gamme, on trouvait la berline deux portes Racing propulsée par le double arbre 2 litres de 113 ch (115 PS). Ce nouveau modèle avait quatre phares ronds (les deux phares intérieurs étant plus petits que les phares extérieurs) et une grille de calandre différente, un spoiler avant, des ailes gonflées et une boîte manuelle à cinq rapports. La Racing avait une vitesse de pointe de 180 km/h.
Grise avec intérieur noir, cette 131 Racing a un aspect particulièrement flatteur tant à l'intérieur qu'à l'extérieur, mais montre de petits points de rouille quand on y regarde de plus près. La peinture est belle, mais le compartiment moteur demanderait à être nettoyé et repeint, et le pare-chocs arrière doit être changé. Bonhams a pu conduire la voiture sur une courte distance et elle a parfaitement fonctionné. La voiture est vendue complète avec sa roue de secours, avec diverses factures, sa carte grise et un contrôle technique valide.
