Ferrari’s replacement for its awe-inspiring Berlinetta Boxer 512 inspired a different sort of awe with its dramatic styling and world-beating performance. For 11 years the Testarossa ruled the road as the world’s fastest production car, a feat it achieved on the strength of its mid-mounted 4.9L flat-12 engine, which used innovative Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection and four overhead cams to produce 390 HP and propel the car to a top speed of 180 MPH in fifth gear.
Cloaked in beautiful Pininfarina-styled aluminum bodywork with Zincrox factory protection, the Testarossa’s performance was complemented with typical Ferrari style, most notably its pronounced side strakes feeding rear-mounted radiators and its extra-wide rear fenders to accommodate wide Goodyears on five-lug alloy wheels. The Testarossa also offered a refined driving experience, offering its occupants luxurious leather upholstery and air conditioning. Between 1984 and 1991 Testarossa production totalled just 7,177 cars; this Rosso Corsa 1989 Testarossa is one of approximately 1,126 produced that year.
Part of a private Michigan collection since 2005, it was built by the factory for export to the Middle East market and was completed to European specifications. While the car retains its European-spec headlights, a third brake light and correct rear bumper were fitted to meet North American standards.
