This 1982 Ferrari Mondial 8 has traveled 34,050 believed-original miles and presents with good panel fit, a well-preserved interior and a tidy engine compartment. Ferrari introduced the Mondial in 1980 as a 2+2 version to its stablemate 308 two-seater sports car, both of which used an essentially identical drivetrain and mechanicals. Designed by Pininfarina and coachbuilt by Carrozzeria Scaglietti, the wedge-shaped Mondial was built around a rear-wheel-drive, mid-mounted engine platform. The Mondial was powered by a fuel-injected 2.9L 90-degree V-8 engine with dual overhead cams for each cylinder bank.
In typical Ferrari racing-engine design, this engine featured a flat-plane crankshaft set up to extract performance at the upper RPM ranges. Power was transmitted through a 5-speed transaxle equipped with a limited-slip differential. The shift pattern on the Mondial had a dog-leg first gear with the traditional H pattern for second through fifth gear. The Mondial was considered the entry-level Ferrari and for enthusiasts wanting an Italian thoroughbred sports car with enough room to carry the driver and an adult passenger while still providing rear seating capacity for two children—or two adults if it were a short drive—it served as a useful entry to the land of Maranello.
Like its sister 308, the Mondial was a well-balanced car that offered exceptional road holding and handling capabilities. Its mid-engine architecture provided an optimal front-to-rear weight distribution, and the comparatively long wheelbase offered a supple ride quality. The Mondial 8 was only produced for three model years, with only 703 examples built between 1980 and 1982. The car presents beautifully in the iconic Ferrari color combination of Rosso Corsa exterior with beige full-leather interior contrasted by deviating black on the dashboard and steering wheel.
