It has been said that “all Ferraris should be red.” This stunning 1999 Ferrari F355 Spider plays right into that mindset, as it is finished in bright Rosso Corsa paint with the requisite Scuderia shields. Believed to have traveled a mere 12,050 original miles, this garage-kept California car features a 3.5L V-8 engine with Bosch Motronic fuel injection that is factory rated at 380 HP. All of that power is transmitted to the ground by an F1 gearbox, the first-generation single-clutch automatic paddle-shifted transmission offered by the Italian automaker. The interior is richly appointed with tan leather and looks just as racy today as when new.
The F355 was the right answer to what a supercar should be in the 1990s and set the table for the future success of the 360, F430, 458 and 488 mid-engine V-8 Ferraris that followed. The 348 model that preceded the F355 was not all that advanced and paled in comparison to some upstarts such as the Acura NSX. Ferrari sought to redress the balance with the F355. The outcome produced one of the most popular Ferraris ever built, one that could be docile in heavy traffic and yet possessed a much higher performance ceiling than its predecessors.
Exotic materials included ultra-lightweight titanium connecting rods, and technology was served by the F1 electrohydraulic paddle-shift transmission that provided lightning-quick shifts and a raucous Formula 1-style sound that was only enhanced in the open-air Spider version—appropriate from a company with more Formula 1 wins than any team in history. The new transmission proved to be wildly popular with Ferrari drivers and only seemed to enhance the overall driving experience. Offered with service records, this is the car that made Ferrari the unquestioned leader of the supercar pack in the 1990s.
