This stunning 2018 Ferrari California T 70th Anniversary Edition is entirely unique, a product of Ferrari’s exclusive Tailor Made program that in 2017 focused on commemorating 70 years of Prancing Horse automobiles. The history of Ferrari special editions is a long and glorious one, encompassing a surprising number of the most exciting road and racing cars ever to grace this earth. In fact, when it came time for the fabled Maranello firm to mark its 70th anniversary in 2017, Ferrari’s Tailor Made personalization service and its in-house Centro Stile design arm were able to draw enough inspiration from Ferrari history to produce 70 unique paint and trim packages.
Blending “the past and the future to create icons of tomorrow,” every one of these 70 unique liveries was created once only for each model. Each design has its genesis in a Ferrari that stands out in the company’s history as a milestone, beginning with the very first official racing sports car built by Enzo Ferrari and his team in 1947, the 125S. Every type of car ever manufactured by Ferrari is represented in the 70th Anniversary Edition series, including grand-touring, sports, sports prototype, show prototype and Formula 1 cars, and all are identified by names that address their significance.
The “Ingrid,” for example, is inspired by the one-off 1954 375 MM coupe originally commissioned by film director Roberto Rossellini for his wife, actress Ingrid Bergman. Built with custom coachwork designed by Pininfarina, this is the car that inspired Ferrari’s iconic Grigio Ingrid paint color. The “Fangio” pays homage to the 290 MM Spyder, in which the great Argentinian driver Juan Manuel Fangio drove to fourth place in the famed four-car Ferrari sweep of the 1956 Mille Miglia. The legendary 250 GT Testa Rossa, variations of which won 10 World Sports Car Championships in the late 1950s and early ‘60s, inspired no fewer than three 70th Anniversary Editions.
Topping that figure are eight variations of the 250 GT series of berlinettas and spyders, most notably two interpretations of the World Manufacturers Championship-winning 250 GTO. Ferrari’s Formula 1 Championships are represented in the “Surtees,” “Red Boxer,” “Lauda” and “Schumacher” Editions. These are but a handful of the 70th Anniversary special editions, the inspirations for which were drawn from the deep well of Ferrari history.
As previously mentioned, each Ferrari produced as part of the 70th Anniversary Edition program is an entirely unique standalone model, including this exquisite Tailor Made California T retractable hardtop modeled after the legendary Ferrari 365 GTB “Daytona” launch combination. As enumerated on its custom dedication plate, its livery is a combination of code-666077 Blu Nart paint with matte black grilles and rear diffuser, “Scuderia Ferrari” shields, “70th Anni” badges, and wing mirrors, “Dreamline” trim and 20-inch alloy wheels in matte Argento Nürburgring.
The Daytona theme repeats inside with fully electric Rosso Connolly leather Daytona-style seats with tone-on-tone stitching, black inserts and Prancing Horse emblems embroidered into the headrests. Rosso Connolly leather is also used on the headliner, lower dash panels, door and trim panels, while smooth and perforated black leathers finish off the upper dash and Manettino-equipped steering wheel.
A yellow rev counter, HiFi sound system, electric inside mirror and Homelink, foldable rear-seat backrest, red carpets with Rosso Connolly edging and logos, aluminum pedals and footrest in Argento Nürburgring, and 20-inch wheels in Argento Nürburgring complete this California T’s Tailor Made specifications. Behind this wealth of special features is the California T’s superb performance, the result of its sophisticated twin-turbocharged 3.9L V-8, 7-speed F1 transmission and Handling Speciale package. Producing a heady 560 HP and 557 lb-ft of torque, the California T hits 60 MPH in just 3.6 seconds.
