Although it long ago proved the effectiveness of the mid-engined sports and grand-touring machine, Ferrari first established its ability to wow car enthusiasts with its venerable front-engined V-12 offerings. In 2006, the Maranello firm set a new standard in that category with the 599 GTB Fiorano, an astoundingly beautiful and enormously capable mid-front-engined masterpiece of sophistication and power. As always, unwilling to rest on its laurels, Ferrari added even more drama to the 599 GTB’s act with the $30,095 Handling GT Evoluzione (HGTE) package gracing this 2010 599 GTB Fiorano Berlinetta.
The core of this comprehensive package of handling and appearance refinements is a retuned suspension combining 17-percent stiffer front and 15-percent stiffer rear springs, a 1-inch-diameter front sway bar in place of the standard 599’s 0.9-inch piece, retuned adjustable shock absorbers and slightly wider front wheels wearing high-grip Pirelli P Zero tires. The 599 HGTE is also 0.4-inch closer to the pavement, includes a complement of carbon-fiber trim pieces inside and out and features Alcantara on the headliner, the center sections of the bucket seats and the floor.
Finished in sparkling three-layer Nero Daytona paint with a Nero interior, this ferociously beautiful 2010 599 GTB HGTE offers all those attributes in combination with a wealth of standard and optional features that includes full-front clear bra protection, unique carbon-fiber Scuderia shields and carbon-fiber roof-trim film. Its Enzo-derived 6.0L/612 HP V-12 engine is mated to Ferrari’s F1-Superfast automated manual gearbox, which is modified as part of the HGTE package to produce insanely quick 85-millisecond shifts (versus the standard 599 GTB’s 100-millisecond times).
A Capristo exhaust system with electronic/gated control allows the driver to control the exhaust note, changing from standard to full howl at the flick of a switch. The factory carbon-ceramic disc brakes remain, but HRE 19-inch front and 20-inch rear wheels wearing Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires replace the factory rolling stock.
