From its dramatic introduction in July 1996 at Germany’s fabled Nürburgring, the Ferrari 550 Maranello was hailed as the best all-around Ferrari road car since the 330-365 GTs of the 1960s. The 550 followed the same formula: a front-engine, rear-drive V-12 two seater with refined yet exciting styling and superb performance. The 550 reflected a new attitude at Ferrari, away from the mid-engined cars described by Ferrari CEO Luca De Montezemolo as “difficult to drive.” The new car bore out that assessment with its comfortable interior and excellent around-town manners while ceding nothing in the way of acceleration, top speed and agility.
In the context of the late 1990s, the Maranello 550 embodied de Montezemolo’s stated commitment to creating a Ferrari with understated styling. The beautiful Pininfarina-penned body was the answer. Initially judged by many in the motoring press as too conservative, it has followed in the footsteps of other classic Ferraris, defying that early verdict as the ensuing years confirmed the integrity of Pininfarina’s design. Like any great Ferrari, the Maranello’s 5.5L/479 HP engine is central to its character.
A 65-degree, 48-valve all-aluminum work of art, it capitalizes on the inherent flexibility of the V-12 layout with power that comes in immediately off idle and presses occupants into the seats all the way up to the 7,700 RPM redline in the last of its six gears, when the speedometer announces their arrival on the doorstep of 200 MPH. This 1997 Ferrari 550 Maranello glows with the beauty of its Nero paint and plush black leather cockpit, which features power seats, windows and locks, air conditioning, JVC AM/FM/CD sound system and that wonderful gated 6-speed shifter.
The 46,522-mile Ferrari recently received a major service including a new timing belt, clutch and tires, and is offered with the original owner’s manual and clean CarFax and AutoCheck.
