Testa Rossa or Testarossa, the name has always stood for the utmost beauty and power in a Ferrari. From 1958 to 1962 factory Testa Rossas won three World Manufacturer’s Championships, and when the name returned in single word form in 1984, it was placed on the dramatically styled mid-engine flat-12 powered berlinetta appointed by Ferrari as the company’s flagship model. By the late 1980s, technology had advanced to the point that Ferrari decided to perform a comprehensive makeover on the Testarossa, one that also would address new emissions and safety regulations. The result was the 512TR, which took the Testarossa formula to its highest level yet.
Pininfarina’s gentle makeover included new front and rear bumpers, giving the 512TR a pair of prominent driving lights and a new grille that coordinated its look with the contemporary 348 and gave better airflow for the air conditioning system. New narrow-spoke alloy wheels showed off the car’s large disc brakes at rest, and enabled the use of 18-inch tires for improved grip. The redesigned cockpit remained unmistakably Ferrari, with a tightly packed instrument cluster behind the padded wheel and heating and air conditioning controls grouped around the precision gated 5-speed shifter.
The big change came amidships, where power from the famed 4.9L flat-12 engine was boosted from 380 to 428 HP at 6,750 RPM using new Nikasil-coated cylinder liners, an increase in compression from 8.7:1 to 10.0:1, larger valves and revised intake and exhaust systems. Only 408 examples found U.S. owners during the 512TR’s three-year production run, including this meticulously maintained low-mileage stunner. Wrapped in Nero with a matching interior, it has travelled just 12,000 miles since new.
