Rivalling Lamborghini's Countach for presence, the Pininfarina-designed Testarossa succeeded brilliantly, the gill slats feeding air to its side-mounted radiators being one of the modern era's most instantly recognizable – and copied - styling devices. A larger car than the 512BB - the increase in width being necessary to accommodate wider tires - the Testarossa managed the trick of combining high downforce with a low coefficient of drag, its graceful body being notable for the absence of extraneous spoilers and other such devices.
Despite the increase in size over the 512BB, the Testarossa was lighter than its predecessor, the body - its steel doors and roof excepted - being, somewhat unusually for a production Ferrari, of aluminum. Luxury touches in the well-equipped cabin included air conditioning, electrically adjustable seats, tilting steering wheel and plentiful leather.
Unlike some of its rivals, the Testarossa possessed light controls and was relatively easy to drive, factors which, allied to its outstanding performance and stunning looks, contributed to an instant and sustained high level of demand. In 1992 the original Testarossa was succeeded by the updated 512TR version, which came with 428bhp on tap and could easily exceed 300km/h. Pininfarina gave the TR a front-end makeover and the newcomer also gained improved under-body aerodynamics and 18" diameter wheels. A total of 2,280 512TRs had been made when production ceased in 1994.
THE MOTORCAR OFFERED
The production of this 512TR started at Maranello during the Spring of 1992, and as one of very few cars delivered to the Canadian market, this car is indeed a rare example. Completed in May of 1992, the new Ferrari was finished as it appears today, in striking and classic Rosso Corsa over a black leather interior. Once exported to Canada, this Ferrari must have been a breathtaking driving experience in the early 1990s, with its sleek lines and powerful V12 engine.
The detailed CARFAX report on file issued for the 512TR attests to ownership in British Columbia, Canada from 1994, and the car appears to have had just one owner there until 2019, when it made its way to the US. The original owners and service manuals confirms this ownership as well.
Service records on file attests to a major engine-out service performed by Ferrari Maserati of North Scottsdale in March of 2020, just very few kilometers ago, where timing belt and necessary service parts was replaced. The receipts for this job add up to more than $15,000. Still presented in the classic Rosso Corsa exterior over a beautiful, well-kept black leather interior, this rare and sought after fully evolved sports car must be one of the finest examples available anywhere. This spectacular 512TR appears to have been very well cared for over the years, with original finishes intact throughout the car, and very little age showing.
The original kilometers-per-hour speedometer remains in the dashboard, and records just 17,207 kilometers (equaling 10,692 miles) at the time of cataloging. With its era-evoking design and comfortable yet sporty driving experience, it is no wonder that these early Ferraris are increasing in popularity among both new and established enthusiasts.
