Following the brilliant 458 Italia, Ferrari’s open-air 458 Spider debuted at Frankfurt in 2011 with a retractable aluminum hardtop, which Ferrari noted to weigh 55 pounds less than the soft top on the F430 Spider. Amazingly, the Spider carries only a negligible 3 MPH speed penalty versus the closed model. An unqualified success on the street and the track in Challenge competition spec, the 458 Italia is a stunning driver’s machine in every respect and a tribute to the benefits derived from Ferrari’s legendary racing program. This 458 Spider is understood to be the only 458 Spider finished in this specific livery, inspired by that of the original 458 race cars.
Just 5,000 miles have been accumulated at the time of writing. Powered by Ferrari’s 4.5L/562 HP V-8 engine mated to a lightning-quick 7-speed F1 dual-clutch transmission and rear transaxle, the 458 Spider is built around a cutting-edge, competition-derived aluminum body shell and chassis, with technical features including SCM2 magnetic suspension damping, AFS system and double-wishbone front suspension. Power delivery is maximized by the E-Diff3 electric rear differential and F1 Trac traction control. Anchor-like braking is achieved with carbon ceramic disc brakes including High Performance ABS with brake prefill and optional yellow calipers.
The cockpit is stunning with the lower tunnel trimmed in leather, carbon fiber racing seats and Diamond-stitched upholstery and carpeting, plus Sport door-sill covers, a colored upper dashboard surface and headrests featuring Ferrari’s iconic “Cavallino Rampante” motif. The competition-style steering wheel features F1-style Manettino controls and the rev counter is in high-visibility yellow. Other select features include a parking camera, radio with Bluetooth and navigation.
