The Ferrari 412 represented the ultimate evolution of the 365 GT4 2+2, the angular V-12-powered grand tourer first introduced in 1972. The 412 was new for 1985 and represented a refinement over its predecessors in all respects. The fuel-injected Tipo F101 V-12, the final iteration of the storied Colombo engine, was enlarged to 4.9-litres and produced 345 horsepower. Bosch ABS was standard, a first for the Ferrari marque. Even the styling, by Leonardo Fioravanti at Pininfarina, was subtly massaged to keep the car’s looks up to date—which also had the happy effect of increasing the rear boot capacity. Both automatic and manual gearboxes were offered, and 576 examples were produced in total before production ended in 1989.
This automatic-equipped Ferrari 412 was delivered new via Sportgarage Bruno Wyss of Zofingen, Switzerland in September 1987 to a gentleman residing in Sempach. The car was finished from the factory in Nero Fer over a Crema Autolux leather interior, just as it appears today. The accompanying warranty book indicates that it was serviced by its retailing dealer consistently until 1992, with subsequent maintenance performed by Garage Foitek of Urdorf and Garage Niki Hasler of Basel.
In 2010, the 412 was certified by Ferrari Classiche, which importantly confirms its matching-numbers engine, gearbox, and differential. At the time of cataloguing, it displayed a modest 26,617 kilometres. It is accompanied by its owner’s manual, warranty book, a spare wheel, and jack.
The last of a long-running series of capable, comfortable Ferrari 2+2s, the 412 also represents the final production incarnation of the Columbo V-12 engine. This Classiche-certified example is a fine representation of a significant Ferrari model.
