Replacing the 365 GTC/4 in 1973 and designated the 365 GT4 2+2, Ferrari’s new and highly luxurious four-seater marked an entirely new stylistic direction for Turin’s Pininfarina design house. Unveiled at Paris in 1972, utilizing the basic mechanicals of the 365 GTB/4 Daytona Berlinetta, Ferrari’s new 2+2 progressed with its handsomely tailored, Pininfarina-designed body virtually unchanged through the 400 and 400i (fuel-injected) models of 1976 through 1984, culminating in the 5.0L 412 from 1985 to 1989. Over those 17 years, this GT line was Ferrari’s longest-running series and the last front-engine Ferrari until the advent of the 456 in 1992.
Befitting its grand touring mission, these handsome and fast four-seater Ferrari models were available with a choice of 5-speed manual or 3-speed GM-sourced Turbo-Hydramatic 400 automatic gearboxes. Fully ensconced in luxurious leather upholstery, occupants of the 412 were whisked from rest to 60 MPH in under 7.0 seconds, en route to top speeds exceeding 150 MPH. Thanks to a ride in a 400i GT with noted businessman Narotam “Nims” Dhillon from Maranello to Florence while visiting Italy in 1985, this Ferrari model piqued his interest, and the memory stuck with him, culminating in the purchase of this very special example by Phil Bachman in 1988.
Bearing S/N 55303, this 1985 Ferrari 400i is one of 1,294 400i models produced, 1 of 388 built with a manual transmission, one of 11 produced in Rosso Chiaro 300/6 (Light Red) paint with a Beige 3218 interior, and one of just five produced in this color combination with a manual transmission. Among the final 10 examples produced, it is the fourth from the last built with a manual transmission and the last produced in this color combination with a manual transmission, making it a very special and collectible specimen, indeed. Offered with the odometer reading 11,347 miles at the time of writing, this 400i is equipped with Engine no. 1321, Gearbox no. 615 and Body no. 467.
As mentioned, its fuel-injected 4.8L/310 HP V-12 engine is paired with a driver-preferred 5-speed manual transmission. Finished in Rosso Chiaro 300/6 paint over a Beige 3218 interior, this “gentlemen’s express” Ferrari is accompanied by Schedoni luggage. In addition to books and manuals, this 1985 Ferrari 400i is offered with the selection of parts required to finish its restoration.
