1980 saw the arrival of Excalibur’s Series IV, and it brought about the first real change in appearance for the Milwaukee, Wisconsin marque. While the new model still evoked vintage Mercedes-Benz, this time it emulated the 500/540K series, rather than the SS/SSK.
The ladder-type chassis, especially unchanged relative to the Series III's, was stretched by a further 13 inches. With four-wheel independent suspension, front and rear anti-roll bars, four-wheel disc brakes, a Positraction rear end, generous 30-gallon fuel tank, and all-stainless dual exhaust system, the Series IV was undoubtedly the most refined and luxurious iteration of Brooks Stevens’ automotive vision produced to that point.
These Series IV cars derived their power from a ubiquitous 305-cubic-inch General Motors V-8 engine—as seen in the contemporary generation of Camaro, Corvette, and Trans Am—which delivers 155 horsepower to the wheels via a Turbo-Hydramatic 400 automatic transmission. Although performance continued to decrease due to stringent Federal requirements, the buying public seemed to readily accept this in exchange for superb comfort and modern appointments.
Thankfully, occupants of the Series IV cars wanted for nothing, with standard cabin appointments including a Blaupunkt CD player, air conditioning system, telescoping steering column, cruise control, dual spotlights, with a power-operated top, seats, windows, mirrors, and rumble seat. Available in both closed and open body styles from 1980 to 1984, Excalibur produced only 31 Roadsters in 1983, in comparison to 107 Phaetons.
This 1983 Series IV Roadster is finished in the archetypical Excalibur “Triple White” color scheme, with an Arctic White exterior, white interior, and matching white top. The cabin is further enriched by red piping and carpets, a wood-trimmed dashboard, and leather-wrapped steering wheel. Additional features include chrome wire wheels wrapped in thin whitewall tires, a full suite of VDO cabin instrumentation, dual side-mounted enclosed spares, and a set of Excalibur’s signature faux chrome-plated side pipes. Finished in March 1983, this Series IV Roadster presently indicates fewer than 2,880 actual miles at time of cataloguing and has had just one private owner since new.
In August 2022, the car was furnished with over $4,600 of servicing which entailed, among other line items, a complete sorting of its brake assemblies, power steering system, and new alternator.
