Originally formed as “Team Viper” and charged with developing Dodge’s now-legendary V-10 muscle machine, Chrysler’s high-performance skunk works evolved over the years into today’s Street & Racing Technology group, which has been responsible for the most exciting Mopars of the 21st century. In addition to the original Viper SRT-10, other SRT tuning recipients included the Chrysler 300C, Jeep’s Grand Cherokee and Dodge’s Challenger and Charger.
That last mention began with the Charger SRT-8 of 2006, when Dodge broke with longstanding convention by offering a reimagining of the classic American station wagon—the Magnum SRT-8—that struck a chord with the Mopar faithful and remains a favorite today. While the Magnum was produced for just three model years, its low-slung, muscular presence, Hemi-powered performance and luxurious accommodations still impress more than a decade later.
Like its Charger sedan contemporary, the Magnum SRT-8 is propelled by Chrysler’s 6.1L Hemi V-8 engine rated at 425 HP at 6,200 RPM and 420 lb-ft of torque at 4,800, numbers that match the advertised rating of the carbureted, cast-iron Hemi of legend but with the benefit of more gears in its TorqueFlite automatic. Also like the Charger, the Magnum inherited the excellent ride of the Mercedes-Benz E-class platform, specifically its upper and lower A-arm front suspension, a 5-link independent rear design and the Electronic Stability Control system. Red-painted Brembo calipers and vented brake discs bring the Magnum to a stop from 80 MPH in just 220 feet.
Lowered to hug the pavement over Hankook Ventus V12 Evo 245/45ZR20 radials wrapping black-painted Lexani wheels, this 2007 Dodge Magnum SRT-8 from the Vannoy Collection marries Bright Silver metallic paint with a black and gray interior featuring red accent stitching. The car features an upgrade Borla exhaust system and has been driven 54,519 miles since new. Power steering and brakes, fog lamps, air conditioning, cruise control, a power driver’s seat, keyless entry, power windows, mirrors and locks, tilt/telescopic steering and an AM/FM/CD stereo contribute to this Magnum SRT-8’s splendid combination of performance, luxury and style.
