The fitting end to the legendary B-body was the 1979 Dodge Magnum, the upscale 2-door release that blended options from both Charger and Cordoba models and was superseded by the Mirada in 1980. This car from The Jeff Sparks Collection shows off some of the reasons it existed. Produced for only two years, the body design remains best known as the final Dodge personally raced by Richard Petty, and the car offered here, a GT-trimmed XE, is the final example of this model that Sparks built for street enjoyment. It has been noted that only 1,674 Magnum XEs also had the premium GT trim package in this final year.
The engine here is an LA-series small-block with upgrades like Mopar Performance valve covers, an aluminum intake manifold, open-element air cleaner, performance exhaust system, upgraded ignition wires and more. This is backed by an automatic transmission, and the Dana-design rear end sports a chrome cover. The GT’s Firm Feel suspension included heavy-duty torsion bars, larger anti-sway bars front and rear, shock absorbers with special valving, and stiffer rear springs. The exterior is done in white with blue GT stripes with body-color-matched factory fender flares as well as a rear spoiler. Noteworthy are the clear-shield-covered headlamps and cleanly designed chrome-edged black grille.
Inside is poshly appointed in blue leather with front bucket seats. The GT’s Firm-Feel power steering system features the optional two-spoke tilt wheel and cruise control. Its unique engine-turned-instrument Rallye dash facing and matching console trim are further highlights, the latter now hosting a Pistol Grip-design shifter. There is an auxiliary tach on the column, factory audio equipment, power windows, chrome pedal details and an in-dash digital clock as well. Selected outside for that custom look are boldly-spoked American Racing wheels and modern BF Goodrich Radial T/A tires. Yes, the Magnum, the B-body and the 1970s all concluded here.
This one showcases Mopar muscle to the very end.
