Representing upscale high performance, the Dodge Coronet R/T entered its fourth model year for 1970 with fresh new styling including an aggressive hoop-style, twin-element grille and smooth, fuselage-style bodylines. Delivering tire-frying performance, tight handling and muscular looks with a sophisticated presence, the Coronet R/T was Dodge Division’s direct competitor to Pontiac’s GTO. While a potent 375 HP/440 CI V-8 engine was standard on the Coronet R/T, the triple-carbureted “Six Pack” was optional with 390 factory-rated horsepower on tap, plus the 426 CI Hemi.

Continued for 1970 after a mid-1969 debut, the optional 440 Six Pack mill was far more than an intimidating multi-carb intake system including an Edelbrock high-rise aluminum intake mounting triple Holley two-barrel carbs. Street economy and drivability were surprisingly good with the 440 running on the center carburetor until the accelerator was floored and the vacuum-advance secondary carburetors were unleashed by progressive linkage. Other Six Pack highlights included Hemi valve springs and retainers, flash-chromed valve stems, a radical hydraulic cam, beefed internals, and a dual-point distributor.

Supporting equipment included a choice of automatic TorqueFlite and A-833 4-speed transmissions, plus Hemi-style heavy-duty suspension. Black 15-inch steel rims with chrome lug nuts and G70x15 black or redline tires were also standard. As the original American Supercar era was reaching its 1970 zenith, just 2,391 examples of the Dodge Coronet R/T were produced in total. Of them, 16 convertibles left the factory with 440 Six Pack power, comprising 7 with a 4-speed transmission and 9 automatic cars, including this example offered here.

Accompanied by its Chrysler Production Broadcast Sheet confirming original features and options, this extremely rare Coronet R/T Convertible is powered by its matching-numbers 440/390 HP Six Pack V-8 engine, paired with a Torqueflite automatic transmission operated by a businesslike column shifter. Featuring an orange exterior finish, complemented by a power-operated white convertible top and white interior, this Coronet R/T is equipped with a wide array of features and amenities including a woodgrain steering wheel and Rallye dash, front bucket seats, an AM radio, the Light Group, a tachometer, dual sideview mirrors and Rally wheels.
